Quick Spring Tech Checkup (10 Minutes)

Think of this like a quick oil change for your technology. In about 10 minutes, you can prevent a lot of the common issues I see every week—slow computers, hacked accounts, and “mystery” pop-ups.

1) Restart your computer (yes, really!)

If you haven’t restarted in a while, your computer can get sluggish. A restart clears out stuck programs and gives your system a fresh start.

  • PC: Start → Power → Restart
  • Mac: Apple menu → Restart

2) Check for updates

Updates are not just “new features”—they fix security holes. If you only do one thing for safety, do this.

  • Windows: Settings → Windows Update
  • Mac: System Settings → General → Software Update
  • iPhone/iPad: Settings → General → Software Update

If you see an update, start it when you have time—and keep your device plugged in.

3) Do a quick password check

Ask yourself two simple questions:

  • Am I using the same password on multiple sites?
  • Is my email password something short or easy to guess?

Your email password is the big one—if someone gets into your email, they can reset passwords for everything else.

4) Look at your storage (avoid the “full hard drive” slowdown)

When storage gets too full, computers slow down and updates can fail.

  • Goal: Keep at least 10–15% free space
  • Delete old downloads, duplicate photos, and apps you don’t use
  • Consider moving photos to cloud storage or an external drive

5) Watch for scams (1-minute reality check)

If you see any of these, pause and don’t click:

  • Pop-ups saying your computer is infected and to call a number
  • Emails that feel urgent: “Your account will be closed today”
  • Anyone asking for gift cards, wire transfers, or crypto

When in doubt, call someone you trust (or call me) before you take action.
